  • DESCRIPTION: Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Engraved by W. Wickinson. John Mudge (1721-1793) was an English medical practitioner who spent most of his life working as a surgeon in Plymouth before earning his M.D. in 1784, allowing him to become a physician. During his life he wrote two medical works - one on smallpox and one on catarrhous cough, the latter of which was widely accepted. He was also an armature telescope mirror creator and earn the illustrious Copley Medal in 1777. He knew Sir Joshua Reynolds, who created the painting from which this mezzotint was based, through his father.
