Despite its name, the Foundling Hospital was an establishment intent on the care and education of orphaned children. Coram was also a supporter of the arts and the Foundling Hospital became the first art gallery to open to the public, featuring a number of Britain's contemporary artists. Its success led to the creation of several art societies within Britain and is believed to have even influenced the formation of the Royal Academy. Coram supported the musical arts, as well. George Frideric Handel, a British baroque composer, held concerts at the hospital for their benefit and generously donated a manuscript for their growing musical education.
