DESCRIPTION: A fine view showing small Greek Island of Patmos located in the Aegean Sea. The Castle of Patmos is prominently shown. Antoine Augustin Calmet, O.S.B. (1672-1757) was a French Benedictine monk and theologian. In 1720 he authored “Dictionnaire historique, critique, chronologique, geographique et litteral de la Bible” (Paris, two vols. folio). This work was translated into English and published in London. The edition was illustrated and this view appeared in this work.
