  • DESCRIPTION: Nineteenth century engraving of the United States Capitol building with the copper dome, designed by Charles Bulfinch, and constructed in 1822-23. This dome graced the capitol until the growth of the Congress required enlargement of the overall building. In 1855, Congress passed legislation to build a bigger dome, more in proportion with the extended profile of the Capitol. <br><br>
