  • DESCRIPTION: By Frederick Dickerman. Joseph E. Johnston served in the Mexican-American War, the Seminoles Wars and in the Civil War, where he fought as a Confederate general. He commanded the Army of the Potomac (also known as the Army of Northern Virginia) during the Civil War, until he was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines. Robert E. Lee would replace him for the rest of the war, but Johnston was not out completely. After recovering he went out west and took up forces against General Sherman. He would ultimately wind up surrendering 865 after suffering numerous retreats with an army that was both undermanned and under-supplied in 1865.
