  • DESCRIPTION: A fine example of Ruscelli’s enlarged edition of Gastaldi‘s important map of the eastern coast of America. First issued in 1548 by Gastaldi. The Gastaldi prototype was the first printed map to combine information from the Verrazano and Cartier voyages, which shaped the modern conception of North America by delineating a contiguous coastline from Florida to Nova Scotia. This map is the 2nd earliest map to focus on the East Coast of North America. The third edition of the map is significantly revised and includes a sea monster and sailing ship. There are a number of new place names including Virginia and Nova Francia and in the interior extensively revised topography. A number of new islands are also added. This third edition (of three) is the rarest of the three Ruscelli states.
