The Fiftieth Street building then became the new home of Columbia College when it moved uptown in 1857." - The Columbia Historical Portrait of New York.<br><br> The Deaf and Dumb Asylum was created in hopes of educating those born unable to hear or speak. Educations for such individuals was virtually unheard of in those days and very few school existed for them in the country.
