  • DESCRIPTION: An early map depicting Central America, the West Indies (Caribbean) and the Gulf of Mexico. Central America is noted as "Nouvelle Espagne" or New Spain since it was still under Spanish control at the time of the map's creation. Some of the noted areas include Cozumel, Jamaica, Cuba, the Virgin Islands, Martinique and St. Lucia. This map is from Bellin's "Le Petit Atlas Maritime, ou Recueil de Cartes et de Plans des Quatre Parties du Monde". This atlas or pilot is a wonderful French produced small sized work that depicted a great many parts of the known world.
