Erikson Day is a forgotten U.S. holiday held on October 9th, commemorating the discovery of North America. Leif Erikson (c.970-1020) was an Icelandic explorer and is believed to have been the first European to discover the continent, some 500 years before Christopher Columbus. The holiday became a popular substitute to Columbus Day in the late 19th century because of anti-Catholic and anti-Italian sentiments.
