• DESCRIPTION: Second state of two.

Jean Lafitte was born in France and later moved to the Gulf Coast of America, where he became a pirate and smuggler. He served a brief stint in War of 1812 when he helped the American forces defend New Orleans. In exchange for his services he and his men were granted a full pardon for their previous crimes. After the war, however, he returned to his old ways and continued to plunder Spanish vessels. He was forced to flee America when some of his lieutenants began attacking American vessels in 1820. Historians are still uncertain of how or where he died and the mystery, coupled with tales of buried treasure, have added to his legacy.
