  • DESCRIPTION: This large folding map depicts part of the explorations for the US Pacific Railroad Surveys, which took place under Secretary of War Jefferson Davis during the mid-1800s as part of a plan to build a transcontinental railroad. Graphic depictions of the surveys were published by the US War Department between 1855 and 1860. <br><br>This particular region, mostly covering Montana, formed part of a route across the northern edge of the United States. Isaac Stevens, the first governor of the Washington Territory, led the exploration of the region. This map shows his route, as well as the routes of other notable explorers such as Mullan, Lambert, Tinkham, and Stanley. The map also includes commentary on the topography of the region, and shows its features in extraordinary detail and excellent relief, including the locations of rivers, mountains, wagon roads, trading posts, and American Indian tribal hunting grounds. <br><br>Wheat Transmissippi West, 867.
