• DESCRIPTION: Tab. 78. Cynoglossum Officinale was used more in the past than it is today. If consumed in large quantities this plant is believed to cause cancer, but if taken in moderation it can have certain health benefits. The leaves, for instance, contain allantoin which help the body heal (it's a common agent in moisturizers). The plant can also be used as a painkiller, help with hemorrhoids, and treat minor injuries. It can also serve as a minor narcotic. Today the herb is mostly used for external treatments. <br><br> This engraving is from Plenck's scarce "Icones Plantarum Medicinalium Secundum Systema Linnaei Digestarum." This work was devoted to the medicinal properties of native European plants. Many had never been illustrated before. The engravings have a freshness and simplicity that charms collectors today.
