The CSS Arkansas was commissioned during the American Civil War. Construction began in 1861 and the ironclad warship was launched in 1862. Her life was short, but in the months of service the Arkansas damaged several enemy vessels. A crippling mechanical issue forced the crew to burn the vessel in August of 1862 to prevent its capture.
