Signed in pencil by the engraver - John W. Evans - lower right. Marked "ARW" in the plate.

The title, written in the lower left margin, is slightly incorrect. The battle is known as the Battle of Seven Pines or the Battle of Fair Oaks. It was an inconclusive conflict that ended in a stalemate and significant loss of life for both sides. The most notable segment might be when Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, replaced the wounded General Joseph E. Johnston with Robert E. Lee.
