DESCRIPTION: George Rogers Clark, 1752-1818. Lieutenant colonel in the Virginia militia during the Revolutionary War. In 1777 he led a force of 175 men into Illinois country on a quest to capture problem outposts—ones where the British had overthrown the French and were using to stir up trouble with the area's Native American's. He and his men captured Kaskaskia and Cahokia in what is now Illinois, and in 1778, captured Vincennes in what is now Indiana. These actions helped to secure the western frontier. He was the brother of William Clark of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. Engraved by T. H. Welch after the painting by J. B. Longacre. Printed by H. Quig.
