Etched below image lower right is Sarah Flower Adams Christian hymn’s first line “Near-er, my God, to Thee! Near-er, to Thee;” <BR><BR> An unusual portrait - both stately and sentimental - President William McKinley is shown giving what would be his last speech while visiting the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. Over fifty thousand spectators packed the Esplanade to hear him. The next day - Friday, September 6, 1901 - Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist, approached the President during a reception at these same fairgrounds and shot him several times. McKinley died eight days later. Witnesses claimed that in his final moments he sang a stanza from his favorite hymn "Nearer My God to Thee". <BR><BR> William McKinley (1843-1901) was born in Ohio and is the last President to have served in the Civil War. He served as a Congressman, including Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Governor of Ohio, and the twenty-fifth President. He was elected to two terms in 1896 and 1900. <BR><BR> In the 1896 election William McKinley and Garret A. Hobart ran a decisive campaign winning the Electoral vote 271 to William J. Bryan and Arthur Seawall’s 176. McKinley and Garret also carried the popular vote by over 400,000. In his first term the country and its economy was growing rapidly. He promoted the Dingley Tariff act raising duties on foreign imports and secured the Gold Standard Act. Due to pressure from Democrats in Congress, McKinley declared war on Spain mostly over the Cuban conflict. The war began on April 25, 1898. and lasted three months, two weeks and four days ending on August 12, 1898, the locations of the battles were in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines and Guam. McKinley annexed Hawaii also in 1898, Hawaii became a state in 1959.<BR><BR> In the 1900 election McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt ran against Democrats William J. Bryan and Adlai E. Stevenson. McKinley and Roosevelt won a second election with a larger margin than in 1896, but McKinley was assassinated six months into his second term. Vice President Roosevelt became the Twenty-sixth President.
