  • DESCRIPTION: 1872 was a presidential election year. Ulysses S. Grant was the Republican incumbent. His competition was Horace Greeley of the Democratic party, and editor of the New York Tribune. In this cartoon Columbia, the personification of America, uses the shield of 'Truth' to protect President Grant from the arrows of 'Misrepresentation : Insinuations,' 'Slander : Lies,' 'Malice : Envy,' and 'Scandal : Malice.' Behind them are the statues of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, as if to insinuate that Grant was among the great presidents of America. He would go on to win the election with ease in November.
