  • DESCRIPTION: Prevost, fecit. The two brothers, Anne-Jean Robert (1758–1820) and Nicolas-Louis Robert (1760–1820) were engineers whom with professor Jacques Charles who built the world's first hydrogen balloon. Charles designed the hydrogen balloon and the Robert brothers invented the methodology for constructing the airtight gas bag. Their first balloon from central Paris on August 27, 1783. On 1 December 1783 Nicolas-Louis accompanied Jacques Charles on a 2-hour, 5-minute flight. This view shows the start of that fateful flight. Below the image is a small circular map showing the tracts of four voyages that were taken in and around Paris. A key to the right gives information as to the flights. A note written on the map describes this as the first aeronautical map which is certainly a likely possibility.
