But his daughter detains (Ulysses) unhappy lamenting (?): and she continually soothes him with soft and winning words.' - The Odyssey of Homer." <br><br> President Ulysses S. Grant ended his second term in March of 1877 and set out on a two year world tour, which began in Liverpool, England that May. His reputation as a Civil War hero and U.S. president saw him warm welcome and he met with many of the world's leaders and politicians (including the Queen of England, the Chancellor of Germany and the Emperor of Japan).
