A scarce map of the map showing part of the route taken by William Dampier's during his first circumnavigation voyage in the 1680's and with his passage across the isthmus of Panama. The map shows the northern parts of South America, Central America and the southern portions of what was to become the United States. Names Maryland, Virginia, Carolina, Florida, New Mexico and California I. (Island of) In the upper right is an inset map of the Cape Verde islands with the route of exploration delineated. William Dampier (1652-1715) was a British navy captain and hydrographer. He was first person to circumnavigate the world three times and the first Englishman to explore parts of Australia. Maps
