• DESCRIPTION: Engraved by Alexander Hay Richie. (1822-1895). A full-length and richly engraved mezzotint portrait of George Washington, after a painting by Peter Frederick Rothermel (1812-1895).

Washington is standing, resting his left hand on the hilt of a dress sword, a nod to his prowess as a military commander. His right hand is placed on an upright book on a table, evidence of an educated and informed leader. The background is formed by stone alcove, pillars, and elegantly draped curtains. A marble-veined floor, formal table strewn with books and papers, and decorative armchair with the United States shield at top celebrate his importance and complete the classical scene. The print is titled with a facsimile of Washington's signature in the lower margin.

The likeness of Washington is derived from Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait; the composition and arrangement of the figure are attributed to P.F. Rothermel.
