DESCRIPTION: Two images - the second is titled "The Labor Exchange - Interior View of the Office at Castle Garden, New York". This engraving shows Castle Garden (also known as Castle Clinton) in its third incarnation. Originally built as a military fort in New York Harbor - one hundred yards off of Manhattan Island - the facility was converted into a privately owned entertainment venue in 1823. Reclaimed by the city in 1855 it became an immigration center and was used as such until 1890. New York City's labor force was flooded with immigrants in the latter half of the 19th century. This brought about many changes: labor unions - both for craftsmen and industrial workers, activism, and political opportunism.
