  • DESCRIPTION: "From Sketches by Our Special Artist". Mormons emigrated to America from several European countries in the second half of the 19th century. Many landed at the Castle Garden immigration center before making their way overland to the Salt Lake Valley of Utah Though New York City did have a branch of early Mormon settlers, led by Parley P. Pratt - a disciple of Joseph Smith, adherents were few and the growth of the church was slow.
