• DESCRIPTION: This political cartoon draws into question the voting laws in America. A Native American, who was born, raised and has a longer ancestry in the land that is the United States, is being turned away from the polls, while blacks and immigrants are being allowed to cast a ballot (including the Irish, who faced great animosity at this point in American history because of their Catholic beliefs). In the background soldiers can be seen carefully watching an Indian settlement further in the distance.

Native Americans weren't granted citizenship, or the right to vote, until 1924, but varying state laws prevented many from voting until 1957.
