DESCRIPTION: Political cartoon depicting Boss Tweed and his cronies cowering before hangmen's nooses. Tweed, in his position at Tammany Hall, was responsible for stealing millions from tax payers. His time in power was also marked with threats, murders, bribes and political favors. He was removed from power in 1871, but it he wasn't convicted for several more years. Even so, when Tweed first appeared in court, and the trial was dismissed because of a lack of proper witnesses, Tweed boasted no one would ever be able to imprison him. Fortunately for New York City, he was put on trial again several months later and was found guilty.
