  • DESCRIPTION: This political cartoon might be in reference to the Democratic and Republican parties finally meeting on middle ground for the choice of president. The 1876 presidential election was and is still regarded as one of the country's most disputed elections. The Republicans had won, but on a very narrow margin and in some areas ballots had been thrown out because of fraud. The mess made it so that Congress had to discern the true victor, a debacle that lasted nearly until inauguration day. Republicans and Democrats debated and passed along desired platforms and policies until final an agreement was made and the president chosen.
