  • DESCRIPTION: S. Russel, del. Kell Bros lithrs Castle St. Holborn. <BR><BR> This proposed bridge was never built, there was controversy over Roebling's suspension bridge seen in the distance. It was felt that the movement of a suspension bridge would cause a rail disaster. However this never occurred. <BR><BR> The Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge, the first fully loaded passenger train crossed the span on March 18, 1855 and for the next forty two years operated as a major crossing between Canada and the United States. The bridge was replaced on August 27, 1897 with a Steel Arch Bridge later renamed the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge. The replacement was due to the aging of the suspension bridge and heaver trains traveling on the rails.
