This fine engraving is based on Albert Bierstadt's monumental painting, "The Rocky Mountains – Lander's Peak," now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bierstadt made his first journey to the American West in 1859 accompanying a Government survey expedition, headed by Colonel Frederick W. Lander. Bierstadt dubbed the central mountain in the picture "Lander's Peak" after the colonel's death in the Civil War. The peak is located in the Wind River Range of the Rocky Mountains in present day Wyoming. A great and powerful image of the American West. When first issued titled versions of this print were advertised at $10 each. Proofs before title and signed by the artist were offered at $50. A huge sum of money at the time.
