  • DESCRIPTION: Covens & Mortier edition of De L'Isle's "foundation map" of North America. R. V. Tooley. The Great Lakes are based on Coronelli and show the French strong points at Tadousac, Quebec, Fort Sorel and Montreal. With this map Del'Isle corrected longitude positions and was the first to show a correct California as a peninsula. It is also the first printed map to depict the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic Ocean.
