  • DESCRIPTION: Engd. by H. Hall's Son, New York. <br><br> Martin Van Buren, Senator, governor and the eighth President of the United States, was born on Dec. 5, 1782, at Kinderhook, N.Y. He was the first president elected that was not born as a British subject. He became a law clerk, entered practice in 1803. Was very active in state politics as state senator and attorney general, he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1820. Was governor of the State of New York for one year in 1828, resigning the position to be secretary of state for Andrew Jackson. In 1836 he was elected President of the United States and served one term. He was quoted as saying “the two happiest days of my life were those of my entrance upon the office and my surrender of it.” <br><br> About the publisher: Henry Bryan Hall (1808 - 1884) moved to New York in 1850, where he founded the firm H. B. Hall and Sons. He created works featuring important American figures, especially from the colonial and Revolutionary periods. Four of his children became accomplished engravers themselves.
