As Commander of the Continental Army, Washington led the colonial forces against Great Britain during the American Revolution (1765 - 1783). He was sworn in as the country's first present in 1789, served two terms and stepped down in 1797. It was a remarkable gesture, coming at a time when the country did not have term limits and Washington's reverence among the people could have allowed him to serve until the end of his life.

About the publisher: Henry Bryan Hall (1808 - 1884) moved to New York in 1850, where he founded the firm H. B. Hall and Sons. He created works featuring important American figures, especially from the colonial and Revolutionary periods. Four of his children became accomplished engravers themselves.
