Map of the Roman Empire at its height, including the British Isles, North Africa and Middle East as far as modern Iraq. With insets of ancient Greece and Italy. Relief in the mountains is shown by hachure, and both the modern and ancient names of towns and regions are included. The Roman Empire was established in 27 BC and lasted for centuries, ultimately covering 5 million square kilometers and governing 70 million people, or 21% of the world’s population at the time.

This version of the map is from an 1866 edition of Johnson’s Family Atlas; earlier versions were jointly published with Browning and Ward. Johnson used new plates and imprints for the 1866 edition, and the fretwork border of the map is typical of the style in Johnson atlases produced between 1864 and 1869.
