  • DESCRIPTION: Early 18th century map of the continent of Asia, from Nicolas de Fer’s ‘Atlas Curieux ou de Monde.’ De Fer was a highly prolific French map publisher during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and was an official geographer for the kings of Spain and France. However, many of de Fer’s maps were drawn with a focus on artistry rather than geographic accuracy; close inspection of this map, for example, shows a land bridge extending from Korea across the Pacific Ocean, and several misshapen geographical features such as India and the Caspian Sea. The map includes decorative cartouches and labels regions and towns. Also illustrates rivers, mountains, transportation routes, and other major features of the continent.
