Scarce early map of Asia; a finely colored, comprehensive depiction of the continent with regions and settlements labeled, as well as many major mountain ranges and rivers. Many smaller islands off the coast are also marked. This map’s curiosities include the strange shape of Japan, the missing Korean peninsula, and the Terra Australis landmass visible in the lower right corner.

Giovanni Botero was an Italian philosopher, poet, and diplomat. Botero produced maps of the continents and the world during the 1590s, which he first published in his ‘Relationi Universali.’ Some of these maps were republished in later editions and works, including Ruscelli’s 1598 version of Ptolemy’s ‘Geographia,’ which extended the Geographia as a modern atlas and treatise on cartography.
