Decorative and well-engraved folding case-map version of J.H. Colton’s world map, which is centered on the Americas and depicts countries and regions in a variety of colors. Colton’s chart became popular as an early American-produced world wall map, which could be purchased and displayed by a variety of Americans – those ‘armchair travelers’ who were curious about other places and wanted to explore intellectually without leaving their homes.

The map is surrounded by a border of acanthus leaves and 12 vignette sketches of city views, including Hong Kong, Ningpo, Rio Janeiro, Venice, and Bordeaux, which would have seemed foreign, exotic, and fascinating to the average American. Interior detail in the continents labels cities, regions, and unexplored territories, while the oceans are detailed with islands, major currents, and commentary on ice sheets in the far north. Additional details of interest in the chart include insets with commentary on the Mercator projection, the distances between major seaports, and the routes of important European explorers throughout the oceans, including Cook, Vancouver, and La Perouse. Retains but removed from original hard covers. Front cover has gold embossed title Colton's Illustrated Map of the World,
