• DESCRIPTION: Shows American soldiers and cavalry firing on Mexican soldiers at Molino del Rey during the Mexican-American War. The Casa Mata is the large fortified stone structure in the background, and Chapultepec appears atop a hill to the right. This view appeared in the portfolio “The War Between the United States and Mexico, Illustrated. Embracing Pictorial Drawings of All the Principal Conflicts by Carl Nebel, . . . With a Description of Each Battle, By Geo. Wilkins Kendall.” Kendall was the editor of the New Orleans newspaper “Daily Picayune” and traveled with the army as a war correspondent. He hired Nebel to create the twelve images that would be used to make prints to illustrate the book. Many consider this work to be most beautiful nineteenth-century publication relating to the early history of Texas.
