  • DESCRIPTION: Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) served in the United State Army from 1903-1951 and held the ranks of General, Field Marshal for the Philippine Army and, in the 30's, Chief of Staff for the Army. He served in the United States occupation of Veracruz, World War I, World War II (in which he also oversaw the occupation of Japan after their surrender) and the Korean War. President Truman, in a very controversial move, relieved him of duty on April 10, 1951. MacArthur earned over a hundred military decorations in his lifetime (a mixture of foreign and domestic ones) and was immensely popular with the American people. He died of biliary cirrhosis on April 5, 1964.<br><br> Samuel J. Woolf (1880-1948) was a graphic artist, journalist, illustrator in New York, N.Y. Born into a family long active in the arts, Woolf studied at the Art Students League and at the National Academy of Design.
