  • DESCRIPTION: A fine example of Hermann Moll's Beaver Map. This map is one of the most famous and important 18th-century maps to depict the British Colonies and claims in North America. Published shortly after the War of Spanish Succession, it is a vivid counterattack on De L'Isle's territorial claims on behalf of the French. A wealth of descriptive detail provides information on such politically important topics as the British alliance with the Iroquois and the French fishing rights in Newfoundland. There is also an excellent description of the Colonial postal routes, including mail routes and delivery times. The map has five insets: one view and four maps. The view is of Niagara Falls with the industrious almost military like beavers building a dam. In the lower left is an overview of the Florida gulf coast and much of the interior southeast. Next is a larger "Map of the Improved Part of Carolina with the Settlements." In the lower right is a small overview of most of North America. Above that is "A Draught of ye Town and Harbour of Charles-Town." The Charleston map shows a small walled town on the bank of the Cooper River. In the lower central portion of the image is a large dedication cartouche, "To the Honourable Walter Dowglass Esqr. Constituted Captain General and Chief Governor of all ye Leeward Islands in America. . . ." A very nice example of this increasingly difficult to obtain map.
