DESCRIPTION: A fantastic (but largely imaginary) perspective view of Yorktown surrender.<br> This print offers a French perspective of the British surrender at Yorktown. The image portrays Yorktown as a bustling city with European-style buildings . Dozens of ships, standards raised, sail in the river as soldiers stand in formation on the shore. General Washington and Count Rochambeau and other officers are shown on horseback. This print highlights the French military contributions to the American victory over the British. This lively scene aimed to resonate with Frenchmen celebrating the British defeat.<br><br> There are very view contemporary views of the Siege and Surrender at Yorktown. The British are usually were very quick to produce an image, chose to largely ignore this monumental loss. As such, it was left to the Americans and French to create contemporary views, of which this is the only period produced large format view intended to record the surrender on October 19, 1781.
