This engraving is based on the 1848 drawing by Augustus Kollner. Smith made a larger engraving from it and later updated it to show a horse drawn street car instead of a horse drawn carriage.
Girard College was established under a bequest from wealthy philanthropist Stephen Girard (1750-1831), whose will specified a school for “poor white male orphans.” In the 1960's it was opened to all.
