• DESCRIPTION: "Little George"

A wonderful pair of stipple engravings by an anonymous engraver.
George Washington is based on Gilbert Stuart's full length "Lansdowne" portrait painted in 1795, with the first engraving of it being published in London by James Heath.

These engravings were likely engraved in America by an artist of some talent,,as the quality of the stipple work is good. Sadly perspective was not one of the artist's talents. In real life George Washington was 6' 2"". This portrait makes him look closer to 4' 5" at best. The portrait of Martha looks to be loosely based on the painting and print of the Washington family by Edward Savage and the engraved portrait of the first lady by William Woolley.

We consider these prints to be quite rare as they likely did not sell well at the time of issue.
