  • DESCRIPTION: An interesting map of the northern regions. The map shows an area from Siberia to Baffin Bay. Recent discoveries include the Russian discoveries in 1728 and 1741. Shows the approximate position of the fictional Sea of the West as well as a note of the search for a Northwest Passage by the English. This map appeared in Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages".<br><br> The cartographer Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was one of the most important and proficient French cartographers of the eighteenth century. He was appointed the first Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, and also the Official Hydrographer to the French King.
