  • DESCRIPTION: Title continues with: Humbly Inscribed to his Excellency the Governor and Company of the State of Connecticut By their Most Obedient Servant Abel Buell.."<br>The first large scale map printed in North America, depicting the boundaries of the new American nation and one of the first to show the "Stars and Stripes" for the first time. Abel Buell (1742-1822) Born in Killingworth, Connecticut, was a goldsmith, silversmith, jewelry designer, engraver, surveyor, printer, type manufacturer, mint master, textile miller, and counterfeiter. <br><br> This collotype was produced by the Meridan Gravure Company after the original once owned by the New Jersey Historical Society. It is now owned by the Library of Congress.<br><br> Collotype prints is a process of transferring via photographic means the image to a zinc plate, than printing it. There is such a thing as zinc plate lithography. The "grain" of a zinc plate has the same characteristics as a lithograph stone. Theses prints were than hand colored. For the period is was an outstanding process, far better than photo-offset.
