  • DESCRIPTION: "J. Norman, Sculp." Portrait of John Hancock writing a letter to the people of Ireland. The Resolutions of the Continental Congress also rests on the table. At his feet are the Boston Port Bill and a Proclamation.<br><br> John Hancock, 1737-1793 was a prominent merchant and statesman of Boston. He also was a Patriot during the American Revolution. He served as president of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He is best remembered for his large and stylish signature on the Declaration of Independence, drawn so that King George III would be able to read his name without difficulty.<br><br> This print appeared in the American edition of "An impartial history of the war in America, between Great Britain and the United States" by William Murray.<br><br> John Norman was a famous colonial period engraver working in Boston and Newburyport after 1780.
