The original story of Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley in 1823. In 1934, Lynd Ward created the first fully illustrated version of the classic story.

This particular wood engraving is part of the signed edition, printed on tissue, which was not used for the book publication. The wood engravings for the book were all unsigned.

Excerpt from this segment of the story: [Victor speaking] “I started from my sleep with horror; a cold dew covered my forehead, my teeth chattered, and every limb became convulsed; when, by the dim and yellow light of the moon, as it forced its way through the window-shutters, I beheld the wretch — the miserable monster whom I had created. He held up the curtain of the bed; and his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me.”

Signed in pencil.
