Before Ellis Island opened in 1892, Castle Garden served as New York City's immigration center. This wood engraving depicts several scenes from the immigration process, including "Nearing Their Journey's End," which depicts a New York harbor scene; "Midnight" where immigrants rest, best they can, on the floor of Castle Garden; "A Bewildered Official" where it appears a language barrier has perplexed an immigration official; and "A Future Legislator" which shows the portraits of several worn immigrants, all of whom hope, as all immigrants do, for a better, brighter future. 18th-19th Century Subjects , New York City - Under $300 , Manhattan - Downtown
