DESCRIPTION: “Two of the best hand colored lithographs produced in America” Harry T. Peters. This print is one of a pair of lithographs after paintings by A. F. Tait. (The other print being of Woodcock and young.) <br><br> Louis Maurer (1832-1932) was born in Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1851. He quickly found employment in several print shops in New York City. He worked as a lithographer for T. W. Strong until 1852 when he was hired away by the firm of Currier & Ives. Maurer excelled at images of horses and sporting subjects and during the eight years he was employed by Currier & Ives, he produced over one hundred prints on these subjects, including such icons as the "Life of the Fireman" series and "Preparing for Market." After a brief time working for the firm of Major & Knapp, Maurer went into partnership with Frederick Heppenheimer. This firm specialized in color printed lithography or chromolithography. The partnership existed from 1874 to 1885 and primarily produced cigar-box labels and illustrated advertisements. It also produced a handful of folio-sized chromolithographs that were then sold to and distributed by Currier & Ives. The firm was renowned for its attention to quality and detail.
