• DESCRIPTION: Proof before publication line. <br><br> William Edgar Marshall (1837-1906), was a New York born painter and engraver. Marshall's reputation as one the 19th century's foremost portrait engravers was cemented with his 1866 image of Abraham Lincoln. Towards the end of this career, based in New York City, he took advantage social contacts and the "cult of celebrity" to secure commissions from several noted dignitaries of the day. <br> <br> This large, dramatic portrait of Depew was done the year of the 1892 Presidential election. Depew was delegate-at-large to Republican National conventions and made the nominating speech for President Benjamin Harrison's unsuccessful bid for a second term. Chauncey M. Depew served as a United States Senator from New York between 1899-1911. <br><br>
