DESCRIPTION: "In the mid-1930s, U.S. foreign and defense policy was pulled in two competing directions. On the one hand, the lingering pain from the losses and horror of World War I, combined with the urgent need to foster domestic economic recovery, fueled the forces of pacifism and isolationism. At the same time, the ominous rumblings from Europe led many, including the powerful Committee on Military Affairs, under the direction of Representative John J. McSwain of South Carolina, to warn about weaknesses in American armed forces and to call for a modern air force. Curtis 2016, 99. This map from Fortune Magazine in 1935 presented the case for greater preparedness by illustrating "three elementary attacks that could be made against the U.S." The three attacks are described in detail in the text: one into the Northeastern U.S. from Canada, a second launched from the Caribbean toward the Chesapeake Bay region, and a third attack from Alaska into the Pacific Northwest.
