  • DESCRIPTION: A trade card for Merrick Thread. Printed by J.G. Lutz, Springfield, Mass. <br><br> The Merrick Thread Company was founded in the 1860s and was well regarded for it's three-cord thread when it began. As sewing machines came more into fashion, they began creating six-cord thread to meet the demands of the the new technology. In 1898 they were merged with a number of other thread companies to form the American Thread Co. <br><br> The Statue of Liberty rests in the foreground of the card. To the right is Castle Williams, which still stands on Governors Island. Even further in the background is the island of Manhattan with the Brooklyn Bridge spanning the East River.
